Happy New Year! Here at Circus Pazaz we are looking forward to be back in 2022! – taking our little circus experience to schools & events around the country, doing what we love – spreading smiles, joy & laughs to family audiences wherever we go! We’ve been busy backstage making some changes & have some exciting news – Circus Pazaz is now a joint partnership! Tilly Twist (Emily Ball) is now joining Clown Zaz (Matt Indge) in partnership, prouducing & running the little bigtop business that she has been part of since 2013 soon after Zaz took on the circus from Fred Delius (of Fred’s Flying Circus) when we became Circus Pazaz! What does the new partnership mean for Circus Pazaz? We aim to continue our circus work in the comunity as an affordable introduction to circus & small enough to fit in busy or built up areas, offering fundraising shows & workshops for schools whilst supplying family friendly festivals & community events with our have-a-go circus workshops area & bigtop shows. Our original tent is getting old now & we have a shiny new yellow & white big top canvas on order which we hope will arrive in July. This season Matt/Zaz will be taking more time to be a dad, leaving Tilly to manage the schools tour but he will still be out & about with the big top during the summer – you might even see Zaz’s kidz Izaac or Ollie performing too, they’ve been honing their circus skills over lockdown & enjoyed appearing in some of the shows we did in 2021. How Zaz & Tilly Tilly first met, Tilly was looking to borrow some circus equipment to run a local circus workshop – Zaz was kind enough to offer his help & mentioned that he was in the process of taking on Fred’s circus & was Tilly interested in any work. Well, that was back in 2013 & Tilly has been a big part of the circus ever since (she’s even got a tattoo of the big top!) 8 years on, it seems fitting that she is now a partner in Circus Pazaz.
Tilly Twist has been performing for over 20 years now
“I first got into circus when I was a child, I had a diabolo” (and gave myself a black eye practicing throwing and catching it!) I then won tickets via the local newspaper to 3 different circuses – all in the space of about a year & became very interested in circus. A friend of my parents taught me to spin fire poi, then another friend gave me some juggling balls & I spent a whole summer teaching myself to juggle. I taught myself to unicycle, and decided I wanted to be a circus performer. My first public show was at Bolney village Millenium Celebrations, organized by Brighton based Same Sky. I also did my work experience with them & want to thank them & Doctor Colin of Circus Box (my Circus dad!) for my first experiences of working in circus & performance.
I decided that was my goal – choosing my GSCE options accordingly to involve drama & then going on to A levels before auditioning for Circus Space (now National Centre for Circus), Circomedia & Zippos Academy of Circus Arts. Being offered places at the last 2, I chose to attend Circomedia & from then on I haven’t looked back! Meeting Zaz & becoming part of Circus Pazaz has been a huge part of my performance life & I truly love the little bigtop & what we do, I’m so excited to be a partner & I look forward to many more shows, bringing smiles & laughs to everyone – I think we all need that more than ever now!
I love the words of Ernest Hemingway….“The circus is the only ageless delight that you can buy for money. Everything else is supposed to be bad for you. But the circus is good for you. It is the only spectacle I know that, while you watch it, gives the quality of a truly happy dream.”
